Eastern Head Massage

Although I was taught this technique in India, it is commonly used in many Eastern countries. In Japan, China, Singapore, and Turkey in addition to India, barbers and hairdressers will automatically offer a reviving scalp massage. The 10-minute massage outlined here is quite energetic and best done on dry hair. Walk around your partner as you do it.

Do not perform a vigorous head massage on wet hair, as too much manipulation can stretch and break individual hairs.

The 10-minute head massage

To bring awareness to the area, rest your hands lightly on either side of the head with your fingers pointing upward. After about a minute, slowly press your hands toward each other and lift slightly, then repeat.

Support the head with your left hand and use the palm of your right to apply circular pressures all over the scalp. Press into the scalp so that the skin, and not the hair, is moved. This movement feels good around the temples. Repeat with your left hand, then use the palms of both your hands together.

With relaxed, curled fingers, make circular pressures all over the scalp, from the forehead to the nape of the neck. Keep your fingers firmly in place.

Support the head with your left hand again and use the flat fingers of your right hand to rub lightly and swiftly backward and forward, starting behind the right ear. Work up and across so that you cover the whole of the head. Then repeat with the fingers of your left hand, using your right hand to stabilize the head.

With the fingertips of your right hand, make short, zig-zagging movements over the scalp while your left hand supports the head. Build up to a fast, deep action. Your partner will either love it or hate it!

To release tension in the neck, support the front of the head with your left hand and use the side of your right hand to rub backward and forward across the base of the skull in a sawing motion. Then knead the base of the neck.

Support the head with your left hand and press the palm of your right hand firmly onto the head. Jiggle the skin on the spot. Work all over your partner's head, then change hands. This movement feels particularly good on the sides of the head. Rest your left hand on the head and with your right, clasp a handful of hair at the roots and twist it around your fingers. Gently pull the hair, hold for a few seconds, then release and repeat with alternate hands.

To finish the massage, stroke the fingers of alternate hands gently through the hair, taking care not to pull it. Then stroke your fingertips as lightly as possible all over the head.
